Deputy Chief Constable Andy Holt said: “Everyone has a role to play in reducing burglary and vehicle crime. Officers and staff are working hard to catch offenders and conduct extra patrols in hot-spot locations but we cannot tackle these issues on our own.

“A significant number of crimes can be avoided if residents and motorists take some simple preventative measures to secure their properties. South Yorkshire Police will do its upmost to track down criminals intent on breaking into your car or home but you can stop the opportunist thief by securing your property.”

“Please help the police to reduce this crime by following their simple advice. Keeping your homes and vehicles secure at all times, will reduce the chances of becoming a victim.”

The biggest rise in burglaries was in Rotherham, where offences shot up by 31.9 per cent, with 546 reported. Vehicle crime rocketed by 26 per cent in Barnsley, with 557 offences recorded.
