Drug testing for drivers
Since March, a new law has come into place where it is now an offence to be driving while above a certain limit of drug use. This includes legal drugs that may impair your ability to drive, or certain levels of illegal drugs. Any employee using a company vehicle for work purposes needs to be aware of what could happen if found over the limit, which means a mandatory disqualification from driving for at least a year, a fine, up to six months in prison and a criminal record.
In some companies where staff are driving or operating heavy machinery, drug testing may be appropriate to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the staff and the public. As drug testing is a sensitive issue, organisations should set out a specific set of guidelines regarding substance abuse in the workplace, and the consequences of taking these substances. A clear drug and alcohol policy will help to ensure employees and their employer are on the same page regarding these issues.
