Drug misuse statistics in the UK

According to figures released from the Home Office, just over a third of of adults who reported drug use in the past year are classed as frequent users, with 8% saying they used drugs every day. Cannabis is the drug that is most likely to be used by frequent drug users, with tranquillisers coming in second.

Around 1 in 12 adults aged 16-59 have taken an illicit drug in the past year, adding up to around 2.8 million people. While these findings aren’t vastly different to last years, poisoning deaths have increased as a result of misusing drugs to a staggering 39.9 deaths per million population for 2014, which is the highest ever recorded.

Public health officials are attributing the increase in deaths to the availability and increased purity of heroin as deaths involving heroin or morphine almost doubled between 2012 and 2014 across all ages.

Don’t let anyone in your business become a statistic. Make sure you have a clear drug misuse policy in place, and encourage anyone with a problem to see medical help.
